Standing near a weapon drop is ill advised.

It would be plausible to say that they use a checked explosion to open the hatch, but not a big explosion as seen there.

That would just damage the weapons. They might explode as a result to not getting used any more, but not explode with the weapons inside it.

They're headcrab canisters that explode on impact, scattering weapons all over the place. It's too awesome to change.

Imagine being empty handed and someone's attacking you.

Canister drops nearby and goes boom.

You grab a shotgun mid-air and proceed to shoot the guy in the face.
